The Effect of Maternal Reaction to Children¡¯s Negative Emotions on Interpersonal Problems of University Students : A Mediating Effect of Internalized Shame

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine a mediating effect of internalized shame on the relationship between maternal reaction to children¡¯s negative emotions and interpersonal problems of university students. Participants were 511 university students in 00 and completed a set of questionnaires consisting of maternal reaction to children¡¯s negative emotions, interpersonal problems and internalized shame. To verify the relation between variables and the mediating effect, it was analyzed structural equation model by using SPSS 21 and AMOS 20. Results of this study were as follows. First, mothers showed more hypersensitivity reactions toward negative emotional expression of sons than daughters, but there was no gender difference as for internalized shame. Second, mother¡¯s emotional coaching response was negatively related to interpersonal problems, while mother¡¯s emotional reduction response and hypersensitivity response were positively related to interpersonal problems. Third, internalized shame partially mediated the relation between maternal reaction to children¡¯s negative emotions and interpersonal problems. That is, it was confirmed that maternal reaction to children¡¯s negative emotions has direct influence on interpersonal problem and indirect influence through internalized shame. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
